project 01 Evaluation

This was my first design project in year 12. The brief was that the RSC is commissioning a series of schools and community tours of shows around the West Midlands. The show will be an adaptation of a Shakespeare play which has been modernised to make it accessible to today's audiences. It will tour in a Luton Van with a staff of 3 Stage Management.

Your brief is to design a versatile set to fit numerous locations with multiple staging possibilities. You must present design ideas, CAD designs and a model box. It would be best if you designed this with The Green Book at the forefront of your design with references to sourcing and making. I chose the Shakespeare play, Macbeth. I chose these pictures in this mood board because I want two staircases and a balcony which I look inspired in these images. I mostly took inspiration from the top left picture of a Macbeth set because it's simple and minimalistic. I also think that 3 stage managers can get it up. I chose this design idea because it is simple but can be used in a lot of ways you could reuse it for another project, and it is easy to assemble.

The wall at the back and in front is flat which is easy to put up and assemble. Three parts connect the wall stairs and balcony because it won't fit into a Luton van if it all joins up together and it makes it more stable. I want this design to give a minimalist look, to give the audience a different feel to Macbeth. It will give each audience a different feel because most plays have a lot on the stage. Another reason I made it minimalist is because of the budget and it also must go touring about west midlands in schools and community tours which I can't add too much design and detail because the school/ community might not have had the room for all the design and props, so I must minimalize it to fit everywhere. I took inspiration from the artist Jackson Pollock who is an abstract artist, by using a dripping splatting technique. I used white grey and red which all resemble death and chaos.

In Act 1 Scene 1, when we meet the witches, Witches 1 will say through the top window" When shall we three meet again in thunder, lighting or in rain" They go away from the window. Then the 2nd Witch comes to the middle window

"When the hurly-burly's is done. when the battle's lost and won" then she moves out of the line of the window. Then the 3rd Witch goes to the bottom window and says, "That will be ere the set of sun.", They keep doing this until the 3rd Witch says her last part of the act and scene, "Anon" which all the witches come to the window and says " fair is foul. Foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air." Then they all exit the stage.

I wanted to do Act 1 Scene 1 like that is because it gives a mysterious feeling, I also think it for them to say those lines in the window because the set minimalistic so it will create the character and involve the set move which is better than them standing in the middle of the stage saying their lines would give less effect, especially on a minimalistic stage.

Although I am proud of the model box that I have done there are a few things which I need to improve on, and one of the things I could improve on is the cutting of the foam board. When I was cutting the foam board the line wasn't as straight as I would have liked it to be and there were a lot of jagged edges. What I can do to improve is take more time when doing it also use a metal ruler to help cut it when using plastic, it was peeling it, I also could have taken more time practising the cutting skills since I have also of time after when I finish my model box. Another thing I could improve on is adding props on the set to give it more visual to show what different props could be on set, e.g. adding a table or some décor.

This project was for a BOA Stage and Screen holocaust performance ‘pages’ where we had to build blocks for the performance. I used tools such as a jigsaw, drill and impact driver, nail gun, sandpaper and hole saw.

project 03

This project was a workshop I did at BOA Stage and Screen where we painted landscape images in portrait. we used a long wooden stick and taped a paintbrush around it. This improved my teamwork skills by making the image look like one person painted it. this was a new skill of painting that I had done using long-painted sticks which are used for large-scale painting.

For this project, I was head of set for two performances ‘ Young Frankenstein’ and ‘Carrie’.

Building for these two shows caused some problems that I had to face, one of them was that the set team had to also build and paint for two other productions. which I had to manage my time for the show and make sure none of them were left out. In the end, I finished building for my two performances in time. Building for these performances improved my time management a lot because I was able to finish my sets and the other two sets in time for the show.

project 05

This project was one of the biggest performances I have worked on which is ‘Peter the Musical’, this was because we were working alongside professional actors, designers and a professional director which my academy hadn't done before. It was a great experience for the set team to work with a personal set designer, this was because he had different ways of building and designing the set that we have learnt which increased our knowledge of the industry.

The team and I have built a set for the year 13 acting show ‘Ballad of Maria Marten’which is based on a barn.

This page shows me making the barn structure using a jigsaw drill and driver.

This page shows me using a chisel, mallet and pliers on a box from another show that we re used to make the lid fit on. this page also shows the team and I making the door.

project 08

These two sets de designs are two projects that I work on in more free time to improve my set design skills using the app Sketchup. The one on the left was inspired by School of Rock and the one on the left is inspired by Blood Brothers which I have watched both plays in the theatre. I used the stage measurement from the Alexandra Theatre.
